    AUGUST 2008

    Knife Seminar held on Saturday 16th August 08 1pm - 5pm.

    16th AUGUST 08.

An Edged Weapon can be various different objects, most people just assume they are knives.

Not only are there knives, but also, broken glass and bottle's, torn drink cans, screwdrivers, razor blades taped to credit cards and even a credit card that has been ran along a wall, will cut you.

The list is endless, however the most common edged weapon you would probably be faced with - is a knife.

Unfortunately in todays street culture, edged weapon assaults are becoming more and more common.

The most common edged weapon attacks are with knives to threaten the individuals, so that they become frightened and hand over their personal possessions.

What would you do if an attacker put a knife to your throat and told you to do something?

The real answer is, that if you have never faced this type of attack, you do not know what you would do. Realistic training for this type of situation can only enhance your survival.

In this seminar we will look at the problems associated with weapon threats.

You will learn how to assess the threat, de-escalate the situation and if all else has failed, perform defensive techniques that will allow you to overcome any would be attacker.

The seminar starts by dealing with knife threats.

We will also teach you how to use common objects as defensive tools.

In every street attack the victim will have at hand various common objects that can be used to defeat and overcome an attacker.

These common objects fall into various categories, such as sharp implements (pens etc), stick like objects (umbrellas), heavy objects (stones/ashtrays), small objects (keys/coins), shield like objects (chairs/bags), whip like objects (belts/chains) and liquids.

In this seminar you will learn how to use these items to defend yourself.

    Gallery Page photos here.

    DECEMBER 2007

Craig boxed at the Charity Boxing Evening in Sheffield.

SATURDAY 1st DECEMBER - See Gallery Page for Photos

Have you ever thought what walking to that ring would be like?

They start to play your music, you hear the roar of approval - your approval.
It sends a shiver down your spine and you focus hard.
Up ahead you see the MC holding a piece of paper. As you walk through the crowd familiar faces shout words of encouragement.
Then you're in the ring and the referee starts barking orders about wanting a good clean fight. His words go over your head because you are eyeball to eyeball with your opponent.
You walk back to your corner, your heart bursting, knowing that when that bell goes you've got to come out fighting......

Tonight here at Sheffield's Grosvenor House Hotel, you will be taking part in - believe me - one of the biggest challenges of your life. You will be doing something that many people wish they had the courage to do, climbing up those three steps into a boxing ring.

This will be the final step in what have been many weeks of hard training. Sometimes you didn't feel like training, sometimes you felt sick after training and at times it did go through your mind to quit and not bother with it.
But you didn't quit and here we are tonight for what will be a night you will remember for the rest of your life, and when you are old and grey you won't be sat in your old people's nursing home telling your grandkids about what you did at work, you will be sat there telling them about the time you climbed up in to a boxing ring, and how it felt being in there.

All the money raised tonight will be donated to Ella's Fund and Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Ella was diagnosed in February 07 with an aggresive brain tumour and underwent three operations in a matter of days. Since then she has endured intensive courses of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in a bid to halt the cancer. Ella's parents Jo and Rob are determined to show their gratitude to staff at Sheffield Children's Hospital and have organised many fund raising events since February.

We at Sheffield Boxing Centre became aware of Ella's Fund through an article that appeared in the Sheffield Telegraph in September - just reading about Jo and Rob's fund raising efforts inspired us to "do our bit" by putting on tonight's show, which we hope will do Ella proud.

Finally as someone who has climbed up those three steps on many occasions, I would just like to say how much I admire you for taking part in tonight's promotion. I would also like to congratulate John McCormack on all his hard work in putting together tonight's show; trust me I know how hard it is to organise a show like tonight's. Well done John.

So all that leaves me to say is good luck and at the sound of the bell, come out fighting and protect yourself at all times.

    Glyn "showboat" Rhodes

    ------------------------------------

Craig fought Paul Wilson which turned out to be the fight of the night - congratulations to Craig and Paul on a draw.

Good on Dave Needham for stepping into the ring - as Glyn says above - "You will be doing something that many people wish they had the courage to do, climbing up those three steps into a boxing ring".

Kapapsheffield would also like to congratulate and thank all the boxers that took part in this event

Many thanks to Glyn Rhodes, Bob Cottrell, Steve Sidebottom, Matt Mowatt, Christian DiPaulo and all of Glyn's boxers for their support.

We would also like to thank all our students and friends who turned up to the event to support Craig and the Charity.

Also a very big thankyou to Sacha Matthews who made Craigs day by asking for his autograph, see her photo below.

Craig and Debbie - Senshido Affiliates.

    APRIL 07

It is with great pleasure to announce that we are now affiliated to
    Senshido.

Richard Dimitri of Senshido is one of the top five Reality Based Self-Defense (RBSD) instructors in the world.

We trained at the Senshido School in Montreal, Canada, with Richard Dimitri, Lee Castelani, Eric Audet and we also met up with Kenny Ramsahai.

It is great for us both to have expanded our family and it was a great experience to have had the opportunity to learn and meet the team.

We have chosen to incorporate the SPA (Senshido's Professional Alliance) into our current teaching methods to help enhance our curriculum.

Our training curriculum is designed to enhance your survivability. You will learn to heighten your awareness and accurately read your intuition in order to avoid violence, aggression and confrontation.

You will learn to de-escalate and defuse a potential aggressive or violent situation using psychological warfare and strategy.

You will also continue to physically defend yourself against the most common attacks on the street if avoidance and de-escalation failed.

Most people would expect our British Army to receive some sort of Hand to Hand training
    - this is not always true!!

Which led members of the HM reserve forces to contact us for training.

    ------------------

I am a member of HM reserve forces and I and several of my colleagues will be mobilised to deploy on peace keeping operations to Afghanistan in 2-3 months time.

We have previously been deployed to Iraq, where we found we had a massive skills gap in the training we were given.

Due to time and resource constraints, we found that we were trained to discourage and de-escalate what was termed minor aggravation and in the application and use of lethal force with firearms.

We had a number of small incidents where we were physically attacked or had to arrest individuals which we were able to deal with through are current level of knowledge and sheer numbers.

However, we also experienced incidents where relatively small situations rapidly expanded into small scale public order events in which members of our group were seriously at risk, mainly from knives, sticks or being dragged into a crowd.

Although we were able to sort these situations out and rescue colleagues, by literally piling in, the only method we had to extract ourselves safely from the situation was to threaten or use lethal force.

With the combination of the legality of having to use lethal force and the current disciplinary action being taken against other members of HM forces and the risk of harm to ourselves, we have collectively challenged our superiors to give us some form of arrest and restraint training.

Although they have been sympathetic they simply can’t get the instructors or find places on courses to allow us to protect ourselves and avoid having to unnecessarily kill anyone, hence I have been looking at the private sector.

    MARCH 2006

    Kapapsheffield Kids - March 06

MARCH 06 - See Gallery Page for Photos

Once a month at our Kickboxing Club we teach our kids the basics of Kapap - this month it was Knife Defence.

The kids had a great time and know that knifes are not toys but weapons that can harm.

Learning self defence at an early age builds confidence, but may well also one day save their lives.

Providing children with options and practical skills to RECOGNIZE, AVOID, and if necessary, ESCAPE violence and abuse.

Through self protection training, children become empowered, learning to replace the fear, confusion and panic of dangerous situations with confidence, personal safety skills and higher self-esteem.

Self Defence, Protection/Martial Arts can be a fine addition to a child's personal safety background, but Kapap Sheffield's curriculum is designed to establish a basic foundation of overall safety in a child's life.

We teach them how to defend themselves from all common attack scenarios: grabs, holds and strikes.

We hope that this additional monthly training will instil in our students, self confidence, physical fitness, discipline, respect and mental focus.

Kapap is not only a martial art - Kapap is a self-esteem building program with both realistic and practical skills useful in today's world.

Kapap is intended to provide a foundation of safety education for a child to build on for the rest of their life.
